Our hearts, prayers, and thoughts go out to the family and friends of UGA nursing student Laken Riley. While so many questions remain, one is most certainly in the forefront of our minds: could this have been prevented.

More than 8 million migrants have come across U.S. borders over these last 3 years. Some, unfortunately, illegally and with criminal records. The last year has seen multiple bills being drawn up that are meant to provide more protections for U.S. citizens. The 'No Sanctuary for Criminals Act' would put an end to sanctuary policies by prohibiting local and state jurisdictions from refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Existing laws prohibit sanctuary cities from cooperating with federal immigration authorities if a foreign national has been charged with a crime but not convicted.
