If you were previously a TurboTax or other big-boy customer, you might have grumbled about the cost of having to pay to file your taxes conveniently online. Well, you might want to take a seat, because paying those costs may soon be over.

The IRS is launching a pilot of its 1st (free) tax online filing tool. Called IRS Direct, it has rivals like Intuit spending millions to fight the launch. The first launch will be available in 12 states, with both English and Spanish as options.
