Studies show that in the U.S., a low-wage worker needs to earn at least $15 an hour to cover basic living costs anywhere in the country.
Still, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. It has not been raised since 2009. Many states have a higher minimum wage (ranging from Montana's $8.75 to Washington's $13.69). Some states have plans to raise their minimum wage to $15/hr beginning in the near future.
