In Namibia’s Nkasa Rupara National Park, on a wooded island ringed by marshes and rivers, lions, local people, and their livestock share the landscape—often with deadly consequences. In 2013, an entire pride of lions was wiped out for preying on livestock.

Since then, Panthera and the Kwando Carnivore Project have built dozens of lion-proof kraals—protecting livelihoods and stemming conflict between people and the area’s remaining lions like Thelma and Louise, who have successfully raised their families there.

Thelma and Louise’s four male cubs are now spirited “teenagers” who will soon leave the pride in search of their own territories—and prey. Their journey into new landscapes where livestock is often unprotected is a recipe for conflict—and lion killing.

Sadly, these young, wandering lions will very likely be poisoned or shot. Unless we do something to protect them."
