HAPPY EARTH DAY! So how did the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 come to be? As the 1960's progressed, numerous environmental issues were in the spotlight: an oil spill in Santa Barbara, the Cuyahoga River (in Ohio) catching on fire, and efforts to save whales. Then-Wisconsin Sen. Gaylor Nelson was among the first leaders to spearhead the movement.
