The Loba people are farmers, shepherds, and merchants that live in the harsh terrain of the Himalayas in northern Nepal. While some fight against the invasion of modern society, leaders are concerned that modernization will cause their culture to be lost forever.

1️⃣ In Loba society, a person can have 3 names. 1 is given by a Buddhist monk, 1 is given by the person's parents at birth, and 1 is given by the guru, or the Hindu spiritual teacher (this name is to be kept a secret).

2️⃣ The global population of the Loba is 11,000. Socially, they are divided into 3 groups, 1 of which contains people of royal heritage.

3️⃣ The Loba are a very religious people. They celebrate 4 major religious festivals in which they may take a 48-hour vow of silence and also give to the poor and needy.

4️⃣ The Loba are fighting modernization and assimilation to a culture that is not their own. When children attend government schools, they are banned from speaking their native language and are even renamed in Nepali.
