About an hour

June 2020 is Pride Month. Thirty days to celebrate LGBTQ culture, to march through the world proud and visible and undeniably here. Pride has become best known for joyous rainbow parades and fabulous concerts, but its origins are rooted in struggle and conflict.

In the late 1960s, just being openly gay was illegal in almost every state in the country. LGBTQ people were often the targets of strict police action; they learned to expect to be arrested any time that they gathered together to socialize with their community.

On June 28, 1969, long-simmering tensions between the LGBTQ community of New York City and the NYPD boiled over at a bar called The Stonewall Inn. This event is the birthplace of the LGBTQ rights movement, and the reason why Pride Month is always in June.
