The polar vortex sweeping across the Midwest, and coming through to the Northeast, has police, homeless shelters, nonprofit groups and community volunteers dialing up efforts to help those without shelter weather the Arctic-like temperatures and stay alive.

Contact your local shelters to see if they are in need of blankets, food, etc.

Or, if you see a homeless person, help get them to a safe warm place. Contact local shelters, or give them a lift to one.

Elderly neighbors or families with young children could also you a check-in from you.
